Sonic Newbery

Sonic Newbery was a collaborative project with Meg Held, taking place throughout 2011, that documented the soundscapes and unnoticed characteristics of the Newbery Tower. Sonic Newbery responded to Sonic Foulis, a project by Roberta Knox, Walter Hamilton and Lu SiSi, which similarly sought to “[map] and [record] the building’s idiosyncratic sounds in precise positions using architectural plans”.

The Newbery Tower and Foulis building were located on Garnet Hill as part of the Glasgow School of Art campus and were demolished in June 2011 to make a way for the new Reid building, designed by Steven Holl. Sonic Newbery//Sonic Foulis hoped to capture some of the un-noticed information that these spaces held before they disappeared.
